Brent Venables couldn’t contain himself over Sooners’ prized recruit, painting an exciting picture of Oklahoma’s future
Brent Venables couldn’t help but get excited about the future of elite 2026 quarterback Bowe Bentley with the Oklahoma Sooners
One of the biggest recruiting wins in recent memory for the Oklahoma Sooners was their win in securing the commitment of elite 2026 quarterback Bowe Bentley. Oklahoma beat out the LSU Tigers for his commitment over the summer, and Bentley has been a key figure in their recruiting ever since then, making several visits to Norman and helping bring recruits with him to the Sooners.
Bentley officially put pen to paper on the first day of the Early Signing Period, joining the Sooners. He’ll be early enrolling as well, kickstarting his future as the face of the program. Officially joining the program means head coach Brent Venables no longer had to hold back on discussing Bentley as a player, and he had plenty of praise to offer for Bentley and his upside.
Venables compares Bentley to Sooner legend
At his press conference on the first day of Early Signing Period, Venables gushed about Bentley and the type of player and leader he is, catching the eyes of many with his comments and a certain player comparison.
“He wins. Great competitor. The anticipation that he throws with, the accuracy that he throws with, the guts and the toughness that he plays with. He’s got a great disposition for it. Unlike a middle linebacker who’s barking all the time, Bowe is pretty cerebral. Reminds you a little of Sam Bradford from that standpoint, never too high, never too low. Every environment he’s in, he loves to compete, whether it’s in baseball or track or football. He was recruited by pretty much everybody in the country. Really excited about what Bowe is going to bring to the quarterback room.”
Venables was spot on describing Bentley as a winner. Ever since he took over as a starter at the beginning of the 2024 season, he never lost a game at Celina, leading them to the Texas State Championships in both years. He’s excelled at the Elite 11 competitions as well, and has an unbelievable athletic background, competing in five different sports in high schools.
Venables didn’t outright compare the two as players, but that competitiveness and winning mindset is very obvious with both, and the two share a lot of traits as players. It’s putting a lot on a young guy to expect him to be anywhere close to Sam Bradford, but it’s a really exciting thing to hear. Bentley has the right mindset and skills to be the next great signal-caller for the Sooners, and now he gets the chance to deliver.
