It didn’t take long after Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners beat the LSU Tigers for the head coach to start talking about his team right away. The journey they have all been on to get to where they are now is special. Because of that journey, it was hard for Venables not to get emotional. In his radio interview after the game, you can hear the quiver in his voice. In his post-game press conference, you can hear the love.

Venables gets deep about his team after beating LSU and reaching the College Football Playoff

“The narrative wasn’t always on their side, and they had to fight through that, but to share this moment with them,” Venables told reporters. “The words are just words, the graphic is just a graphic, this team is about action… Just a room full of a bunch of misfits, and they believe, and they’re grimy, but they like it.”

This program won just six games last season and lost to Navy in a bowl game. This program hasn’t won many meaningful games since Venables became the head coach. And the individual journey he has been on as a human in his personal life has been something in itself that we won’t get into. To see this team finally get to play some football in December is so massive for the university, the program, and the fans. Seeing and hearing Venables get a bit emotional while talking about his team is heartwarming.

Venables made the decision to call plays on the defensive side of the ball this season after former defensive coordinator Zac Alley left for the DC job at West Virginia, who finished with just four wins this season. That turned out to be one of the best decisions Venables has made. This defense has been the best in the country, and now they’re headed to the College Football Playoff.

But don’t let all the emotional and deep stuff sway you away from what’s really important right now. The Sooners still have one more game to play. If we’re being honest, their offense cannot play that same way against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, or whoever they are set to play, in the first round of the CFP. Whether they get a home game or an away game doesn’t really matter to them, as they can play with anyone, anywhere. However, the offense has to be better if they want this Cinderella story, or whatever you want to call it, to have a storybook ending.
