It’s clear that the Oklahoma Sooners have one of the best defenses in the country in 2025. You can probably say they have the best defense in the SEC, and if not, certainly top-three in their conference. A lot of that is because of the retention they had on that side of the ball. Another part of that is because of Brent Venables.

One of the greatest defensive coordinators in this era of football, Venables knows how to do one thing, if anything – call and coach a defense. He’s shown that so far this year, he can still do it. Last year, the defense was great, but Zac Alley called the plays. Now, Venables is doing it again, and he looks like he’s having a blast.

“Yeah, we’ve got a fantastic defensive staff, and have had a lot of carryover with Coach Bates, Coach Chavis, Coach Hall, and myself,” Venables said. “Those are guys that have been here, and we got coach Goodwin and Coach Dreiling that have come in as well, so I can be a head coach too and take care of the inside and outside linebackers and, yeah, just a lot of coaches that have coached at a really high elite level for a long time. So, I’ve been involved since I’ve been here. My fingerprint’s all over it. So some ways it’s changed… But it’s been fun again. I love coaching, I love strategy. I love leading and but, man, I got a bunch of alphas, you know, on that side of the ball, as far as coaches and really good players.”

Sooners HC Brent Venables is back to doing what he does best

Venables has taken what was already an elite defense, to a whole other level. The Sooners have the No. 4 scoring defense in the country, the No. 1 pass defense efficiency, No. 4 third down defense, and the #26 explosive play defense, according to SEC Mike. The numbers say they may be the best defense in in the country, because I’m not sure there is another defense that is as balanced statistically as this one.

And, yes, I get it – they haven’t played much great competition, I say as the Michigan Wolverines just scored 63 points this week. However, they’re playing who’s on their schedule, that’s all they can do. And, they’re dominating everyone that’s on their schedule. The Auburn Tigers on Saturday, should be next.

The defense is going to be going against former Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold. Not to mention, an offense that has been very successful running the ball, in every facet, and not very successful throwing the ball. They have had some success throwing it, but it’s all been limited. They seem much more comfortable running the ball with Arnold than they do passing it. This is a game where Venables and his defense, could make Arnold wish he never transferred to a school on OU’s schedule.

That game is going to be fun to watch, and Venables is going to be able to dictate it all.
