Last year, the Oklahoma Sooners were ripped apart by injuries on offense. Several different receivers and offensive linemen battled injuries that played a major part in their offense being abysmal and their worst in a decade.
Even during the spring, the Sooners had injuries that limited plenty of key players. One was a mammoth blow that knocked transfer wide receiver Javonnie Gibson out for months. Gibson was reportedly dominant in early spring training and was primed to be a starter. Additionally, Jayden Gibson had a setback that caused many to question whether he was even going to make it back for the Sooners this season.
However, at a media appearance on Tuesday, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables waylaid those fears and finally provided some good news on the injury front for the two receivers.
"Right on schedule. I wouldn’t say that they’re ahead of schedule, if you will. And certainly they’re not behind. There have been no setbacks. So again, looking for the return of both of ‘em. If you just went off the basic script of the injuries and how long it takes, the beginning of the season. And I say that, to be fully healthy. What goes into that is training and individual drills and things of that nature, during the course of fall camp and getting into team settings and amping that up as you go along with the idea of being ready for the beginning of the season, in the first couple of weeks."
If both of these receivers are ready to go by the Sooners' Week 2 matchup against the Michigan Wolverines, that's a huge win for Oklahoma. While they might not necessarily need them to beat Michigan, having as many playmakers as they can get is only going to help them get there.
The Sooners already have Deion Burks, Jacob Jordan, and Zion Kearney returning from last season, and fellow transfer wide receiver Isaiah Sategna has impressed throughout the spring. Additionally, freshman Elijah Thomas has showed out so far in camp and many seem convinced it's only a matter of time before he breaks into the starting lineup this season.
If both Gibsons are ready to go by the time Oklahoma begins SEC play, watch out for the Sooners.
