While meeting with the media on Wednesday via SEC Media Teleconference, Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables let it be known that wide receiver Jayden Gibson is no longer with the program. Gibson was set to be a key player this year if he could return from injury, which he had yet to do.

Gibson suffered a season-ending injury in the spring to his leg, and prior to the season, he may have suffered a setback, but he just hasn’t been able to get back to the level everyone thought he could. Now, at the halfway point of the 2025 season, Gibson had yet to play a snap for the Sooners.

Jayden Gibson’s stats at Oklahoma

  • 2022: Played in nine games, caught one pass for 12 yards. Played a bunch of special teams.
  • 2023: Played in 13 games, caught 14 passes for 375 receiving yards, and five touchdown receptions.
  • 2024: Did not play due to injury.
  • 2025: Did not play due to injury.

Gibson could have just been buried in the depth chart

With Deion Burks, Isaiah Sategna, Keontez Lewis, and now JaVonnie Gibson being back, Jayden Gibson was just buried down the depth chart and too far behind to make it up. That doesn’t even count how big of a receiving option tight end Jaren Kanak has been, too. And young guys like Ivan Carreon and Elijah Thomas have been stellar on special teams, or when their number is called, along with Jer’Michael Carter.

After the news surfaced on Twitter, Gibson took to social media to thank Oklahoma.

Gibson had been with Oklahoma since 2022, where he played a very small role in the receiving corps, and in 2023, where he was a key player with over 300 receiving yards. He didn’t play at all in 2024 due to injuries.

He could always find a way to play for another football program in 2026, and if healthy, that program would be getting one heck of a player. However, at this point, it’s pretty obvious that’s a big if when it comes to the health side of things.

You have to wish a guy like him luck moving forward, with all he’s been through.
