Brent Venables revealed the Oklahoma Sooners are set to do what should have been done a long time ago
Brent Venables let everyone know the Sooners plan on putting padding on the brick wall where Keontez Lewis was hurt.
Against Kent State, the Oklahoma Sooners lost wide receiver Keontez Lewis early in the game after he made head-on contact with a brick wall outside of the end zone. Lewis was carted off the field afterward.
While Lewis is recovering from the scary moment, head coach Brent Venables revealed that the Sooners will do what should have been done a long time ago.
“I think they’re gonna put some padding up… that’s what I was told,” Venables told reporters on Tuesday regarding that brick wall.
Sooners are lucky Lewis is okay
Let’s be honest, that should have been padded a long time ago, especially considering how close the wall is to the back of the end zone. The wall is no more than five feet from the back of the end zone, and it’s just brick. Surprisingly, a similar injury has never happened there before.
The moment was one of the scarier injuries we’ve seen in some time, in all of sports. Luckily, Lewis is on his way to recovery.
“It kind of made my heart stop for a little bit… That was a really scary situation, so it was great to see him walk into the building the next day. He had a smile on his face… Whenever he’s ready to play, he’ll be ready to play,” offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle told reporters on Tuesday.
Lewis is a crucial depth piece to the Sooners’ offense, one that is fourth in receptions, receiving yards, and second in touchdowns. He will likely miss the game against the Texas Longhorns this week, and when the Sooners get back to Norman in two weeks against the Ole Miss Rebels, we could see some padding on the wall. Hopefully, by then, the Sooners will still be undefeated and at or near the top of the SEC.
