The Oklahoma Sooners won a game in a hostile environment that few had predicted they would win. The Alabama Crimson Tide was the No. 4 team in the country, and its home stadium may be the toughest place to play in the country, as 100 thousand fans yelled at the top of their lungs to try and affect Oklahoma’s play.

To think about where the Sooners have come from since this time last season, to where they are now, is huge. Head coach Brent Venables has truly turned the program around, just as he promised. Winning a game like that will only make things better as well.

Venables talks magnitude of their win over Alabama on the road

“This is a place that had the nation’s longest winning streak… Really special… Nobody really deserved to lose that football game,” Venables told reporters in his postgame presser, in which he opened up in his statement by complimenting Alabama and the game they played.

The game was huge, and while Venables and his team may now be firmly in position to make the College Football Playoffs, he knows that in the grand scheme of things, the win isn’t the end-all be-all.

“The tree is judged by its fruit. Again, we are 8-2, so there are no trophies being awarded for that,” Venables said.

The Sooners still have to play the Missouri Tigers, who are missing their starting quarterback and haven’t looked particularly great. However, that is a team that can sneak up on the Sooners and beat them if they’re not careful. Oklahoma then gets to play the LSU Tigers, who are without a head coach and may soon be embroiled in a lawsuit with their former head coach, Brian Kelly.

Both of those games can be losses if Oklahoma doesn’t handle things properly. And, if they lose those games and don’t make the College Football Playoffs, then the Alabama win isn’t as important as it should be. Venables knows that, and you can be sure he will have his team ready to play.
