Brent Venables gives promising update and insight on WR Keontez Lewis after scary injury vs. Kent State
Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners are wishing Keontez Lewis well.
The Oklahoma Sooners had a scary injury moment with Keontez Lewis during their home game against Kent State, when the wide receiver ran into the brick wall outside of the end zone headfirst and was carted off the field.
Venables shared somewhat of an injury update on Lewis, and some insight on how Lewis was when he sprinted over to see him during the injury moment.
“The initial scans came back good. That was scary for him,” Venables started on Lewis. “He was alert, he was in pain in his back, you’re dang right, I was very concerned. When I got over there, he was coherent. I was thankful because it seemed and appeared all things considered, he seemed okay.”
Oklahoma Sooners could help prevent similar injuries from happening
After the game, Venables was also asked about the wall, which isn’t padded, and whether it would be possible to do so in the future.
“We are evaluating all options when it comes to the safety of our players,” Venables said.
This is something that could help prevent such an injury from happening again or anything similar, which would involve a player running into a brick wall. Let’s be honest, that wall is not far enough from the end zone to not have padding on it.
Lewis was injured earlier in the year when he was hit helmet to helmet against the Temple Owls and missed time due to a concussion. This could be his second concussion of the year, which is a bit scary overall.
Lewis was the Sooners’ best receiver in the first week of the season against Illinois State with two touchdowns. While he hasn’t quite done that since then, he is a big piece to the offense for the Sooners. Missing him for any amount of time will hurt OU.
