The College Football Playoff Selection Committee just blessed the Oklahoma Sooners in more ways than one
The Sooners get to host a home playoff game.
The Oklahoma Sooners have come a long way since last season. Last year, they won just six games and lost their bowl game to Navy. The offense was easily the worst in the SEC. The defense was good, but not good enough to overcome everything.
This year, Brent Venables and his staff have turned things around so much so that the Sooners are hosting a College Football Playoff game.
That feat is a blessing in itself from the College Football Playoff Committee. On Sunday, during the selection show, the committee blessed the Sooners once more. They gave the Sooners one of the easiest opponents possible. The Sooners will host the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Oklahoma is blessed to have landed Alabama as its playoff opponent
The decision likely came down to whether the committee wanted to give Oklahoma the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the BYU Cougars, or the Miami Hurricanes. There were even conversations about teams like the Texas Longhorns and Vanderbilt Commodores. However, the three big ones seemed to be Bama, Notre Dame, and Miami.
On Sunday, the committee chose Alabama to get into the postseason, despite the Crimson Tide being blown out by the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday in the SEC Championship Game. This is a huge blessing to Oklahoma and Venables.
Not only did that bad Oklahoma team beat Alabama in 2024, but the Sooners beat them this year, too. Oklahoma went to Tuscaloosa and beat Alabama, despite a poor offensive performance. This defense has won them games, and if it can get the offense going, there is not one team in the College Football playoff that wants to play Oklahoma.
The committee selected Alabama over Miami and Notre Dame in shocking fashion. However, this is a game we know Oklahoma can win, whereas the other two teams present a bit more mystery. Oklahoma has done it before, and it knows what to do again. Not to mention, Alabama is beat up after playing just one extra game.
