Danny Stutsman is at training camp showing the Saints exactly what Sooners fans and media tried to warn them about
The Oklahoma Sooners should have a stacked and elite defense in 2025. The Oklahoma Sooners should have a stacked and elite defense in 2025. Last season, they had one of the best defenses in the entire country, but a terrible offense kept them from winning games and put the defense in terrible situations every single game.
In 2025, they are going to have maybe as much depth as they have ever had in the Brent Venables era. I’d say last year they had more, but when you dove into that side of the ball throughout the season, the depth wasn’t there. But it wasn’t there because they had so many injuries, and the guys who were supposed to be depth ended up being the starters.
However, the Sooners’ defense did lose two huge assets from their defense last year in Safety Billy Bowman, who was drafted to the Atlanta Falcons, and linebacker Danny Stutsman, who was drafted to the New Orleans Saints.
Both of them were amazing for the Sooners last year and during their entire Sooners careers. So, they will certainly miss those guys, but they are off doing bigger and better things. And for Stutsman, one of the best linebackers the Sooners have had over the last decade or so, he’s been balling at the Saints training camp.
There was a few highlights copied from one day at training camp practice posted by New Orleans Football that had Stutsman everywhere, all over the field. He’s definitely been showing the Saints what Sooners media and fans have been saying for some time now — he’s a dog.
How Danny Stutsman has done at Saints training camp, and what’s his future role
If I were to rank training camp “breakout” players, the rookie linebacker would absolutely be in the first few I mention. Stutsman has shown that his athleticism and instincts are strengths that even some of his biggest fans in the scouting world may have underrated during the draft cycle. It remains to be seen how new DC Brandon Staley will deploy his linebackers, but I expect Stutsman to be third in line there, only behind Demario Davis and Pete Werner. Staley’s roots have been built in the 3-4 mindset, and we’ve seen role adjustments for players like Cameron Jordan, Chase Young, and others off the edge in practice. For Stutsman, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him play a bulk of special teams snaps this season alongside fellow depth LB Nephi Sewell. That being said, his role on defense may grow as the season grows, too. We’ll get a better idea on Stutsman’s projection during the preseason. – Adam Holt, A to Z Sports New Orleans
The Oklahoma Sooners developed Stutsman into one hell of a player, and now we will get to see what it is that he becomes in the NFL. So far, it seems like he is carving himself out a role.
