Oklahoma Sooners defense made Bama HC Kalen DeBoer preach a message to Ty Simpson that no QB wants to hear
The Oklahoma Sooners defense showed up against Kalen DeBoer, Ty Simpson, and Alabama.
The Oklahoma Sooners’ defense showed up to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with a vendetta. They saw that the Alabama Crimson Tide scheduled their homecoming game against OU, when schools usually do that for teams they know they will beat. The defense, and the entire team, really, did not take that well. Bama HC Kalen DeBoer and Bama QB ty Simpson got a good taste of some of that anger.
The Sooners forced turnover after turnover, and should have had one more on Ty Simpson, where he threw an interception right to Robert Spears-Jennings, but a defensive pass interference call away from the play negated the turnover.
Simpson wasn’t great, as he made some really bad reads and fumbled the ball in a crucial situation. Simpson has had an issue with that, but the Sooners’ defense made DeBoer preach a message to Simpson.
Sooners’ defense didn’t play perfectly, but they played well enough
“With the pressure that they brought, he’s gotta get rid of it and be OK with throwing it away,” DeBoer told reporters after the game.
“You can only hold on so long. And I feel like with the blitz they had, you’re gonna get overwhelmed and outnumbered. And so, you just gotta understand the situation. I know it’s third down, and he wants to stay on the field. But you just gotta understand, your defense is playing pretty good, too, and you just gotta live with punting once in a while.”
No quarterback wants to hear their coach say that it’s okay to live with a punt, especially when you play in the SEC and every possession is valuable. Simpson is still one of the best, if not the best, quarterbacks in the country. He’s still going to be a first-round pick in the NFL Draft. And, most importantly, Simpson is an elite competitor, so he always wants the ball in his hands, not leaving it up to the defense to make a play.
But DeBoer is right. However, this time around, it was the Sooners who ultimately capitalized on the extra possessions. Bama moved the ball up and down the field, but they couldn’t score when it mattered most. Brent Venables’ defense was the top dog in the game, forcing Simpson into several turnovers. Let’s hope they do the same against the Missouri Tigers and then LSU Tigers.
