The Oklahoma Sooners have been making a ton of moves with their 2026 recruiting class. Now, some of that has been good, and some has not. They’re flipping players left and right, but they’ve also lost a few players to decommitments over the last few weeks. That’s part of the new era of college football.

This time, it was 2026 defensive tackle T-Ron Richardson, who’s from the state of Virginia. This one feels like it has absolutely nothing to do with Oklahoma and anything they may or may not have done wrong. This decommitment feels like it has James Franklin’s name written all over it.

Richardson is likely to commit to Virginia Tech

Now, the Sooners are losing out on a great player. They’re losing out on a guy who has a ton of potential, especially given his 6’5 frame and athleticism at the defensive tackle position. Richardson is the No. 42 defensive tackle in the class and the No. 11 player in Virginia.

But, as we know, the Sooners are big on getting overlooked three stars that look like they can actually become more. Look at true freshman cornerback Courtland Guillory, or Taylor Wein, Jayden Jackson, and so many others on this team that are former three stars.

The Sooners likely felt like Richardson could be a real problem with some development. So, yes, losing him does hurt. However, you cannot really blame the kid. He’s from Virginia, and James Franklin, the former Penn State Nittany Lions head coach, is at Virginia Tech now.

Franklin is a great recruiter and coach who just ran into a hump he couldn’t get over at Penn State. But at VT, he can really transform that program into something it hasn’t been in a long time. That, and being close to home is probably enticing to the young man.

The Sooners are still flipping and pursuing other 2026 players. They still have defensive tackles Brian Harris and James Carrington in their 2026 class, too.
