The Oklahoma Sooners had a very big problem last year on the offensive side of the ball, okay, maybe more than one problem, but we all saw how bad the quarterback play was last year. Both Jackspon Arnold and Michael Hawkins had bad moments.

Now, not all of their offensive issues were due to a bad quarterback. In fact, some of the bad quarterback play was because of the bad offensive scheme and injuries. Regardless, they feel like everything that needed to be fixed this offseason, has been fixed, including the quarterback position.

They fired Seth Littrell, the former offensive coordinator, mid-season and ended up hiring former Washington State OC Ben Arbuckle as the replacement. Arbuckle was one of the hottest names on the market, and with that, he brought his quarterback, John Mateer, who was a top-five quarterback last year.

But some questions and concerns are heading into 2025. Some feel like the talent they played against may be far better this upcoming year; thus, it is not translating over.

Opposing coaches aren't worried about that, especially when it comes to Mateer.

"He's going to be one of the best quarterbacks in the country next year," an opposing coach told ESPN. "If that guy's in rhythm, you can't stop him. He seems like an elite competitor, and those quarterbacks scare me more than even the high-talent guys.

"They're the ones on fourth-and-5 in the red zone, where the game's on the line, like, if it's not there, they're going to take off and it's going to be a touchdown. Those are the guys that keep you awake at night. I'd be shocked if he's not one of the top SEC quarterbacks, if not one of the top quarterbacks in the nation."

The Sooners needed a guy who has done it at a high level, and while the competition Mateer was playing last season wasn't as great as the SEC, he still did it. Meanwhile, the two guys that played for the Sooners last year, well, they really didn't have any experience at all, and especially not any SEC experience.

Mateer was the perfect addition and the biggest one for the Sooners, too. We are talking about a guy who has the potential to be a top-five pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
