Former Oklahoma Sooners LB Danny Stutsman explains that he finally knows how it feels to be in the shoes of all his fans
Saints LB Danny Stutsman has been stressed out watching the Oklahoma Sooners as a fan.
Danny Stutsman is one of the best Oklahoma Sooners linebackers we have seen in a long time, and he’s quite the fan favorite. After having a stellar 2024 season, Stutsman was drafted to the New Orleans Saints, where he will play his former teammate, Billy Bowman, twice a year on the Atlanta Falcons.
No longer being on the Sooners, though, allows him to become a true fan. The pressure of being a player and playing in these huge moments that he played in is something average fans won’t ever know about. But, at the same time, he is realizing that the fan side of things is something he’s never experienced.
“I can talk OU football all day. It’s kind of tough being a fan. I sometimes I have to turn off the game sometimes because I get so anxious. It’s awful, man, and it’s honestly so hard being a fan of a team you truly love. Sometimes I’m like, ‘John [Mateer] you should have thrown the ball to Jaren [Kanak] right there.’ Obviously, I’m not tweeting it out, though. I’m invested in everything, like when John hurt his hand, I’m trying to get the inside scoop.”
The Sooners’ fan base surely knows exactly what Stutsman is talking about.
Sooners fans have been watching Stutsman’s rookie season
Stutsman’s role with New Orleans has been one fans have wondered about since the first few weeks of the regular season passed. The rookie linebacker is a consistent piece of the special teams plan for the Saints, but his opportunity on defense has been limited. When the former Sooner has played, he’s been productive, seemingly always bringing down a ball carrier as soon as he enters.
That being said, there is still a bit of trust in veteran Pete Werner as the starter beside Demario Davis. Werner struggled badly earlier in the season, but he has looked more comfortable in Brandon Staley’s unit recently. Regardless, Stutsman should see more playing time as the final weeks of the season approach. Thus far, the young LB has totaled 28 tackles this season for the Saints. – Adam Holt, A to Z Sports New Orleans
