The Oklahoma Sooners have been a bit of a front office pipeline in recent years, with staffers like JR Sandlin and Chuck Lillie both taking prominent jobs at other schools after their work helping build the Sooners’ roster.

Another former Oklahoma staffer has begun spreading his wings in the personnel world of football, and has now made the rounds at every major university in the state.

A meteoric rise for former Sooner

A former student assistant for Oklahoma, Andrew Lee has now been promoted three times in three straight years, an abnormal but highly encouraging sign for Lee’s acumen.

Lee’s journey in football administration is a fascinating one. According to his LinkedIn page, he was a part-time server at Chili’s as recently as August of 2022 before joining the Sooners as a student assistant. Now, he’s pulling off an impressive exponential rise in football. Naturally, I’m using this as evidence that Chili’s truly is the greatest restaurant in America. Lee is pulling off a triple dipper of his own now, working at all three FBS Oklahoma universities in three different seasons.

Last season, Lee’s work as Assistant Director of Player Personnel helped the Tulsa Golden Hurricane finish with one of the top classes in the G5 level. Tulsa famously beat Oklahoma State last season, perhaps signaling the death knell for Mike Gundy’s tenure with the Cowboys.

Lee will now have to help Oklahoma State rebuild after years of roster neglect. New Oklahoma State head coach Eric Morris has brought in a boatload of transfers, with 54(!) transfers into Stillwater this offseason. Lee’s connections throughout the state and proven background in helping Tulsa recruit at some top in-state schools like Booker T. Washington, Owasso, and Jenks should help the Pokes out in maintaining their success recruiting in-state talent.

Here soon, I expect the rest of the college football world to start trying to pluck talent away from the Oklahoma Sooners’ front office that Jim Nagy has built. If Lee’s tenure goes well at Oklahoma State, perhaps the next step in his journey would be a return home to the Sooners in another promotion.
