Former Oklahoma Sooners star’s professional career at risk after mysterious comments from NFL executive surrounding his injury
Joe Mixon’s mysterious injury has many speculating on his future.
Many fans of the Oklahoma Sooners remember the career of Joe Mixon well, from it’s inauspicious and troubled beginning to capping it off with records being rewritten in Norman.
Mixon was one of the best playmakers for the Sooners of the 2000’s, and he formed one of the best tandems in Oklahoma football history alongside Samaje Perine before making his way to the NFL.
However, Mixon faces what could be a career-altering turning point in his professional career, and now it seems like his NFL future is murkier than ever.
Will Joe Mixon play in the NFL again?
Mixon turned his productive collegiate success into a second-round selection by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2017 NFL Draft, and he hit the ground running up north. Mixon played in Cincinnati for seven seasons, establishing himself as one of the best ‘backs in franchise history by ranking second all-time in rushing touchdowns and third in rushing yards. Mixon was traded to the Houston Texans ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
After a strong 2024 season, however, Mixon sustained some sort of injury in the following offseason that has prevented him from doing any sort of football activity since the OTA period of last summer. Much of that injury has been kept hidden from the public, making it a frustrating situation that has angered fans and journalists.
Appearing on Super Bowl radio row this week, Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio more or less stated that the team has no idea what Mixon’s current status is. Caserio has stated previously that it’s a medical condition that just hasn’t worked itself out, which would hopefully put to bed any wild rumors surrounding what happened to him.
“We’re, at some point, probably going to see Joe for an evaluation to kind of see where he is,” Caserio said. “Honestly, Joe worked really hard to try and get himself ready. I think he’s committed to try to be able to play football this year. We’ll see if he’s physically is able to do it or not. So, it’s a little bit of a moving target still. Before we get to the season, I’m sure we’ll have an idea— probably know before then— of what the situation is.”
Whatever this injury is, it’s forced Mixon to miss an entire season of work and has put the future of his NFL career in jeopardy. Mixon has taken to social media to state his intent to return to action for the 2026 season, but we have no idea in what capacity he’ll be available. All we can do now is wait for more information to come out and hope that the former superstar returns to form soon.
