The Oklahoma Sooners played their first-ever game as an SEC team but against a non-conference team the Temple Owls. And, man, it was a good showing in some areas and a bad showing in others.
Let's keep in mind, this is the first game of the year and there is no preseason like there is in the NFL. These guys have been playing against each other every day, so there will be some rust. Therefore, let's hold the overreactions after the first week of football because this one game doesn't determine if they will win or lose the National Championship, or heck, even make it there for that matter.
But, the first half was one to look at for sure, and there are some observations to take away.
Deion Burks is good, like really good
I think this one is obvious. He has three touchdowns in the first half and no one can guard him or stay in front of him. Burks has found the end zone three times and every time he was either wide open or made one hell of a catch. And, you can tell that all of that will translate over to SEC play because he has the tools to do so. He's a freak.
Third down offense is bad
The Sooners are 0-7 on third down, which is terrible, even worse than Temple, who is 1-7 on third down. Luckily, they have still scored more than 30 points in the first half because Temple is just that bad. But, this is something that Brent Venables and offensive coordinator Seth Littrell have to get fixed because that will not fly in the SEC, unlike Deion Burks.
WRs have had some pretty bad drops
Hester had two drops that were pretty unacceptable, one would have been a touchdown and the best pass of the day by Jackson Arnold, and the other would have been for a first down, where he was wide open. Brenen Thompson had a few drops, and even others had some missed plays. This will not stay this way, I can promise you that, but it is something worth noting. This wide receiver corps is much better than what they are showing.
How Oklahoma Sooners’ Jackson Arnold has already started to prove doubters wrong just a few snaps into 2024
The Sooners have a big-time dude on their hands.
