The Oklahoma Sooners have been looking for their quarterback of the future to take over the reigns from John Mateer in the near future. Mateer has two years of eligibility left, meaning that at most, the Sooners have until the 2027 to find the answer to that problem.
They could have found it in their recent offer out of Celina, Texas in 2026 quarterback prospect Bowe Bentley. The Sooners are a "dream offer" for Bentley, who is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the state of Texas and a state champion.
According to SoonerScoop, Bentley grew up loving the Sooners and their proximity to home is a key factor in their recruitment of the talented signal-caller.
However, the Sooners already have a commitment for the 2026 class in Jaden O'Neal, who has this far remained steadfast in his commitment to the Sooners despite multiple offensive coordinator changes.
Previewing Oklahoma Sooners 2025 offense depth chart: How does Ben Arbuckle change the room?
The 2024 offseason brought plenty of changes to the Oklahoma Sooners' depth chart heading into next season. Over 30 players departed in the transfer portal, some starters, others not, and the Sooners brought in a decent haul of replacements to fill in the gaps and upgrade at a few spots. What does the team look […]
Despite that, both Brent Venables and new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle have pushed hard to bring in Bentley with this class. Could the Sooners be interested in letting the best man win out of this group? That feels like a risky strategy with the volatility of the transfer portal, but it is an intriguing idea to see which of these two talents can push themselves to earn the job instead of it being handed to them, like it was for Jackson Arnold.
It's interesting to see the Sooners continue to be aggressive in pursuing talent, and new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle has hit the ground running in his recruiting, a welcome sign after some inconsistent results from previous offensive coordinator Seth Littrell.
Oklahoma has had tremendous success with quarterbacks from the Lone Star State in recent years. Bowe Bentley could be their next big-time quarterback of the future.
