The Oklahoma Sooners have been busy in the transfer portal in the winter and spring windows, bringing in 19 total transfers (Cole Gonzales transferred in during the winter and left during the spring window) to turn the team around after a dismal 2024 season.
The room with the most turnover was undoubtedly the wide receiver room, with six departures in the winter window. Thanks to the Sooners' recent addition of McNeese wide receiver Jer'Michael Carter, the Sooners have now added five transfers to replace those departures.
One stat, courtesy of George Stoia of Sooner Scoop, reveals just how drastically different the Sooners' receiving room will look compared to their 2024 room.
"The six receivers Oklahoma lost following the 2024 season combined for 41 receptions and 690 yards in 2024. The five receivers the Sooners added this offseason combined for 205 receptions and 3,145 yards in 2024."
Now, obviously, there is some context needed with the injuries and abysmal quarterback play and scheme Oklahoma had in 2024. However, it's hard to overlook just how drastic the difference in numbers is here.
It's clear the Sooners didn't want to bank on upside projects and projections at wide receiver and wanted proven production here. Aside from one target in Josiah Martin, each of Oklahoma's targets pulled in incredible production last year.
- Javonnie Gibson: 70 receptions, 1,209 yards, 9 touchdowns
- Keontez Lewis: 49 receptions, 813 yards, 5 touchdowns
- Isaiah Sategna: 37 receptions, 490 yards, 1 touchdown
- Jer'Michael Carter: 38 receptions, 548 yards, 3 touchdowns
- Josiah Martin: 12 receptions, 112 yards
The Sooners are bringing this to Norman to pair with Deion Burks, Zion Kearney, and freshman phenom Elijah Thomas as part of new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle's offense.
Arbuckle's offense will capitalize on the plethora of wide receivers Oklahoma has in their room, with multiple packages of at least three wide receivers and an up-tempo offense that will require rotations there outside.
Hopefully, this goes from a position of weakness to a position of strength for Oklahoma in 2025.
