John Mateer excited for Oklahoma Sooners' new look offense in 2025 'We're going to throw a lot at you'
One of the reasons why there is so much optimism around the Oklahoma Sooners heading into 2025 is the new look offense led by offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, who the Sooners hired in December. One of the reasons why there is so much optimism around the Oklahoma Sooners heading into 2025 is the new look offense led by offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, who the Sooners hired in December.
Arbuckle, paired with quarterback John Mateer, led one of the most explosive offenses in college football last season at Washington State. The Cougars were sixth in scoring and tied with Oregon at 10th place in EPA/Play. Oklahoma last season was 7th percentile in explosive plays. Washington State? 98th.
At the Manning Passing Academy, John Mateer smiled and offered fervent support and excitement over the Sooners' new look offense:
"You guys saw it last year. A lot of tempo and a lot of different things. We’re going to throw a lot at you and we’ve got a lot more players to throw at you now, too…We got some new guys in the spring portal, which is huge. We got Jer’Michael Carter, Jaydn Ott, and Tate Sandell. Jaydn Ott’s great. He can do a lot of great things. We’ve got a lot of guys who can do a lot. We got him in the portal and it’s huge, but I don’t want to not talk about the other guys we already had because they’re freaking good, too. Some of our new receivers are real good. Like, Keontez Lewis. He’s new. He was at Wisconsin and came from a smaller school. He’s super smart and has a lot of experience. A vet. There’s a lot of guys. You talk about the o-line, all those dudes on the o-line. Jacob Sexton, Eddy Pierre-Louis, Jake Maikkula, Troy Everrett, Febechi Nwaiwu, and Derek Simmons from Western Carolina — he’s a dog. We’ve got a lot of dudes."
Now in his third year in Arbuckle's system, Mateer's comfort has only grown in the offense, and there's plenty of reason to expect him to improve now in his second year as the starter. Given his numbers last season, it's almost hard to fathom he still has room to grow, which should be a scary thought for teams on Oklahoma's schedule.
The buzz building out of Oklahoma around the offense is a completely different tune than it has been in recent years. We'll see if they deliver on the hype.
NFL Draft analyst tabs Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer as potential big riser up draft boards if he does one key thing
If you had told fans of the Oklahoma Sooners at the midpoint of last season that a quarterback in a Sooners uniform would be high on boards for NFL Draft analysts, I suspect many of them would consider you crazy or wonder if some miracle occurred. As it turns out, no miracle here, just the […]
