Even someone who needs John Mateer to fail is showing he has full confidence in the Oklahoma Sooners QB
The Oklahoma Sooners have two very humble quarterbacks in John Mateer and Michael Hawkins.
The Oklahoma Sooners currently have a quarterback problem. John Mateer isn’t playing well enough for them to be winning games that they are in position to win. That has to change, and even Mateer knows that. But the most impressive part about this all is that his backup – who needs Mateer to fail or get injured in order to see the field – has complete confidence in the starter.
“Let’s work 10. Go Be great,” Michael Hawkins Jr. tweeted.
Sooners have a humble pair of quarterbacks
While Hawkins really needs Mateer to play badly, or even fail, to get his chance on the field, he doesn’t care about that. He wants to see his brother succeed because that is the chemistry and culture this team has built. Mateer has helped Hawkins get better, so Hawkins isn’t going to start praying on his downfall now.
“John is a great mentor,” Hawkins told reporters prior to the Kent State game. “He’s obviously older than me, and he’s been in an offense for a while, so he’s a great guy to go to for questions himself. He helps me with stuff I don’t know, and just cannot develop my game.
“If I see things he needs… It’s a great relationship we have, and I’m glad to have him as a mentor. I lean on him a lot throughout the weeks of him playing, and we always talk and get that connection even better throughout the season. He’s a great guy to go to, even for the little questions I have.”
Mateer is just not seeing the field right at the moment, as his eyes and feet are telling the defense exactly where he is going to go with the ball. He is also missing open receivers far too often and just not going through his progressions the way he was at the beginning of the season. You could say if these terrible plays keep up, we could see Hawkins come in for him, but at this point, no one knows that.
The last two times Hawkins had the chance to come in for Mateer, whether it was blowing out South Carolina or when Mateer’s helmet came off, it has been Whitt Newbauer to play for Mateer, not Hawkins Jr. But the dynamic the two of them have is amazing.
