Landing a top-tier quarterback was arguably the biggest win for the Oklahoma Sooners this offseason, especially after enduring one of their weakest offensive years in recent memory.

Bringing in a player like John Mateer, one of the best in the country, and placing him in an offensive scheme he’s already thrived in with standout stats, is a game-changer. Plus, they’ve surrounded him with solid receivers and playmakers to boost the attack on that side of the ball, an attack that really wasn't there last season.

Still, the Sooners need to plan beyond their current starter. They’ve got Jett Niu, a skilled three-star freshman, and Jaden O’Neal, a 2026 four-star quarterback, joining next season, but depth at the position is always a priority. Oklahoma isn’t stopping there—they’re hungry for more talent.

For some time, Bowe Bentley has been on their radar. Now, with Bentley trimming his list to three schools and Oklahoma making the cut, the Sooners are gaining traction in their pursuit of him.

Oklahoma Sooners land in QB Bowe Bentley's top 3

Bowe Bentley, hailing from Celina, Texas, is a standout quarterback in the 2026 recruiting class. Measuring 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, he’s a four-star talent, ranked by On3 as the No. 5 QB and No. 111 overall prospect in his year.

He’s zeroed in on three schools—Georgia, LSU, and Oklahoma—for his college future, scheduling visits in June: Georgia (June 6-8), Oklahoma (June 13-15), and LSU (June 20-22). Bentley’s no stranger to these campuses, having checked them out previously, and he’s fielded more than 20 scholarship offers from programs like Texas Tech, Ohio State, and Florida State. His impressive showings, notably at the 2025 Navy All-American Bowl, have recruiters, including Oklahoma’s Brent Venables, eager to snag him.

Bentley’s choice between Georgia, LSU, and Oklahoma will be a key storyline as he enters his senior year, with Oklahoma gaining ground. The Sooners are making him a top priority. During his June visit, he’ll be the only recruit on campus, unlike the usual multi-recruit visits, showing just how much effort Oklahoma is putting into landing him.

After he announced it, Mateer went to his Instagram post and commented something showing his support.

"Yeah yeah yeah."

The Sooners have a culture built, so much so that a guy who hasn't even played a game for the Sooners yet is doing his side of things, showing support to recruits who will likely be there after he's gone. That's important for a team trying to rebuild.

And, it shows the type of guy that Mateer is.
