John Mateer has a mic-drop moment while deciphering the difference between him and a Heisman Trophy winner
John Mateer isn’t anything like Johnny Manziel, on or off the field.
It’s clear throughout the college football world that the Oklahoma Sooners have one of the best quarterbacks in the country in John Mateer. Some would even say that Mateer is the best QB in the country. But, for some reason, everyone wants to compare him to the first great white college QB they can think of that are also mobile, and that’s not fair to him.
So, no, he doesn’t have “a little Baker Mayfield [Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB] to him.” And, no, he certainly isn’t like Johnny Manziel.
“I’m going to church in the morning,” Mateer said after the win over Auburn when asked about the differences between him and Manziel.
Sure, they may play alike a little bit, but they’re not the same player at all. Mateer is much more powerful with his run. He takes hits, isn’t afraid to put his helmet down and run through some guys if that means getting the first down. Manziel, well, he was much more of a guy who would run around guys. Both are great players in their own respects, but they’re their own players, so can we keep it that way? Mateer doesn’t have to be compared to someone else to be great. He’s letting all of his play do the talking.
Sooners QB John Mateer has helped turn Oklahoma around
Last year, the Oklahoma Sooners were a team that had an elite defense but one of the worst offenses in the country. They had a quarterback problem, and now, since getting Mateer, it’s clear they don’t have that same problem. Now, they’re not perfect at all, as the run game was as bad as it’s been in a very long time. But this team is so clearly better than they were last year.
The win over Auburn probably should have been more convincing, but this is the SEC, and every game is going to be a battle. But, in the close but sloppy win, Mateer was able to really turn things up a notch and show people who the Sooners got in the transfer portal. He had the clutch touchdown late in the game, and was pretty much the only thing going right on offense, in a game where the Tigers showed that they actually have a very good defense.
Mateer is creating his own legacy. He went 24/36 with 271 passing yards, a passing touchdown, 29 rushing yards, and a rushing touchdown. He was the offense on Saturday.
