Football is not supposed to always feel the same way it does for Oklahoma Sooners fans every single week: An absolute rollercoaster that feels like it’s going to derail at any moment, but it doesn’t. So, you hop right back on the ride for another go around. That’s what it’s like watching quarterback John Mateer every week.

John Mateer gets real with himself in win vs. the LSU Tigers

Mateer had three interceptions in the game, and could have had another one had the LSU defender not dropped it. His third quarter was some of the worst football you’ll see at the position this season. And he has no more thumb surgery recovery as an excuse. This time, it was all him, just playing badly, and he knows that.

“When you have a third quarter like I did, I knew I just had to keep going out there and playing football… I was either going to hate myself forever or become a man,” Mateer said after the win over LSU.

That’s as real as it gets, and you love the honesty from Mateer. That’s one thing you will always get from him – candidness. But, even though they won the game, he still didn’t fix his play in this one. Sure, he had over 300 passing yards and two passing touchdowns to finish the game, but man, if you watched the game, the tape says a lot more than the statsheet does.

Those touchdowns and a chunk of the yards weren’t really on him. He threw a bubble screen to Deion Burks, who took it to the house for 45 yards. Then, Mateer threw to a wide open, like the most wide open throw he will ever get in his entire career, to Isaiah Sategna for 58 yards.

Mateer was as bad as anything we have seen this year outside of the game against the Texas Longhorns. However, he won this game, so that’s all that matters.
