When the Oklahoma Sooners beat up on the Missouri Tigers, in a win that was ugly for both sides, they got one step closer to the College Football Playoff. They still have to beat the LSU Tigers to cement that spot, but if they keep making plays like they did last week, that should be doable.

And there may not have been a bigger play, when you factor in context, than junior cornerback Jacobe Johnson’s interception.

“He came here as a country cover three corner,” head coach Brent Venables told reporters after the win over the Tigers. “That shows tremendous development. Then he got into position, turned his gaze back, and became the receiver. That was a huge play. Talk about a momentum killer.”

Jacobe Johnson’s interception came at a significant time

During the time of Johnson’s interception, the Tigers were driving down the field fairly well. They were about the 45-yard line, and some things were working for them. The defense needed to get off the field, and on first down, Johnson read the route, stuck with the receiver stride for stride, and turned around as if he were the receiver for the beautiful interception.

The interception didn’t lead to any points, but it stopped the Tigers from scoring. Johnson doesn’t play nearly as much as he should, but that’s not entirely his fault. The Sooners have some really good cornerbacks. On that play alone, he showed why he should be playing more.

Oklahoma starts Courtland Guillory and Eli Bowen on the outside. That’s a true freshman and a sophomore. Granted, they’re insanely good for how young they are, but Johnson deserves some more snaps. If he can consistently play the nickel, that could be a way for him to get and stay on the field more often. If not, getting him in for Bowen or Guillory every now and then to keep everyone fresh would be super smart.

Johnson has developed a ton over the last two years, and this year he has put that development into play on the field.
