Michael Hawkins’ parents use John Mateer’s terrible game as an opportunity to remind everyone of how the college football business is

The Sooners need good quarterback play from John Mateer, or whoever it will be, moving forward.

In this new era of college football, political influences from athletic departments, boosters, and NCAA policies are increasingly affecting programs, coaches, players, and even parents. There have always been politics in the sport, but now their impact is more visible than ever. Some Oklahoma Sooners parents believe these political factors are influencing team decisions, even after the win over the LSU Tigers.

We all saw how bad quarterback John Mateer played. His three interceptions matched the season high he had against the Texas Longhorns. Then, he had the excuse of returning from hand surgery too early. Now, against LSU, he just looked bad. Backup: Michael Hawkins’ parents wanted their son to get a shot, but they think politics is why he didn’t.

Sooners QB Michael Hawkins probably should have gotten a chance

It looked like Oklahoma was down and out. Mateer threw his third interception of the game, LSU went up in the game, and Hawkins’ mom tweets out a yawning emoji, almost like she’s hinting that her son wouldn’t be playing that way.

Of course, Mateer ended up with over 300 passing yards and two passing touchdowns, and the win. However, those touchdowns and a chunk of the yards weren’t really on him. He threw a bubble screen to Deion Burks, who took it to the house for 45 yards. Then, Mateer threw to a wide open, like the most wide open throw he will ever get in his entire career, to Isaiah Sategna for 58 yards. Mateer almost had another interception, which would have been his fourth, but the LSU defender dropped it.

Hawkins hasn’t just looked amazing this year when he’s played; he’s made plenty of plays that show there’s something there. He had more of those moments last season than Mateer has had this season. So, yeah, when they looked down and out, of course, Hawkins should have gotten a chance. But the reality is. The Sooners are paying Mateer a lot of money – they couldn’t bench him.

Hawkins’ dad tweeted out after the game that the sport is all about money and politics. Someone responded to him, saying that Mateer is bad, and everything behind him on the bench is, too. Of course, Mike Hawkins, a former Sooners cornerback, responded by saying his son is three times better than Mateer and that he just hasn’t had his opportunity yet.

The offense’s struggles against LSU highlight the need for adjustments, but the team’s win offers hope and motivation to improve for the College Football Playoff.
