The Oklahoma Sooners were active in the transfer portal this past cycle as they looked to overhaul a disappointing 2024 team before they entered year two of their SEC experience.
Oklahoma pulled in 15 transfers (and will likely still pursue more in the upcoming spring portal window), with the vast majority focusing on the offensive side of the ball.
With the portal cycle died down (for now), 247Sports ranked their top-100 players from the transfer portal window. The Sooners put a trio of players on the list, including a top-five player.
"5. John Mateer – QB, Oklahoma – One of the most dynamic players in college football in 2024 is off to Norman as Mateer's big-time playmaking ability reunites with OC Ben Arbuckle to ignite a Sooners offense in need of a shot to the arm."
"64. Marvin Jones Jr. – EDGE, Oklahoma – A former five-star, Jones departs Tallahassee for Norman in the quest of restoring his potential as one of the most promising pass rushers in the country. A natural talent with designated pass-rushing ability, the former Georgia standout has an excellent opportunity to elevate his play positioned opposite R. Mason Thomas."
"92. Derek Simmons – OT, Oklahoma – A name steadily climbing transfer portal rankings, Simmons' ability to play both left and right tackle, in addition to guard, makes him a valuable commodity for an Oklahoma offensive line in need of improvement. Listed at 6-foot-6 and 320 pounds, the Western Carolina standout's frame and knowledge of multiple positions should help him transition into the SEC with relative ease."
All three of these players are well deserving of this nomination, though I think Jones and Simmons should be higher on the list, given what they have on film.
I do also believe that safety/linebacker Kendal Daniels should have been on this list as well. However, after a down 2024 in a role not suited for him, it's understandable why he wasn't.
