The Oklahoma Sooners pulled off one of their biggest recruiting wins in recent memory last week when they added elite tight end prospect Seneca Driver. The 2027 recruit is one of the top tight end recruits in the country and is the highest-ranked recruit at the position the Sooners have ever landed.

Notably, Driver is the No.1 overall recruit from the state of Kentucky. An embarrassing loss like that for an in-state recruit is going to hurt anyone, but it evidently sent new Kentucky Wildcats head coach Will Stein into a tizzy.

Jason Witten gets another win over Kentucky

As a player with the Tennessee Volunteers, Jason Witten never lost a game to Kentucky. He’s continuing that win streak, but this time as a coach. As tight ends coach for the Sooners, Witten lured Driver away from his in-state Wildcats.

New Kentucky head coach Will Stein was irate over Driver’s decision, to say the least.

“Recruiting always starts within your state. No matter where I’ve been, you have to win the state, always. Obviously, not to mention names, we got — you know what it is. That’s something you can’t allow to happen. It can’t. We have to win the state, especially when you have extremely talented players, which I’m excited about in this ’27 class, the guys that are here….But here’s what I’m gonna tell you, too, right? I’m not gonna beg, man, I’m not. You either want to be a part of this or you don’t. We have every resource possible to go find great players.”

As promising as Stein’s program could be, the Sooners have already arrived. After a strong 2025 season that culminated in a College Football Playoff appearance, the Sooners have been able to sell their vision to recruits across the country, and it’s culminated in them boasting the No.1 recruiting class in the country.

With Jason Witten at the helm, the future of the Sooners’ tight end room feels brighter than ever before.
