How hungry are the Oklahoma Sooners to reach the College Football Playoff and prove they’re in the cream of the SEC crop? The 4-0 Sooners are surging despite learning that star quarterback John Mateer will miss approximately one month of action due to a broken bone in his right hand. The first-year playmaker has already become a beloved member of the Sooners, and the latest news only furthers it.

While Oklahoma tries to replace a playmaker who has been lauded as the best passer in the nation with a 67.4% completion rate, 1,215 yards, 190 rushing yards, and 11 total touchdowns, the state is hoping Mateer bounces back quickly. Backup Michael Hawkins will look to manage the ship as best he can against Kent State, Texas, and South Carolina, but the Sooners are holding out hope.

The support culminated on Thursday as the Sooners edged even closer to becoming a true SEC member. Sometimes, having major support from a politician helps show how deeply a program is embedded in the state.

John Mateer’s surgeon receives AG’s commendation

Gentner Drummond, Attorney General of the State of Oklahoma, posted this hilarious message about Mateer’s surgeon, Dr. Steven Shin.

“I hereby issue this official commendation of Dr. Shin for single-handedly saving John Mateer’s season. BOOMER!,” typed the Oklahoma State graduate.

Whereas, Dr. Steven Shin of Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is widely considered one of the foremost hand surgeons in the United States; and
Whereas, this remarkable surgeon has operated on many star athletes, including Drew Brees, Stephen Curry, Jordan Love, Mike Trout and OKC Thunder forward Jalen Williams; and
Whereas, Dr. Shin successfully completed surgery September 24 on University of Oklahoma QB John Mateer, who promptly declared his surgeon to be “the GOAT”; and
Whereas, Dr. Shin has earned the gratitude of Sooner fans far and wide, who have taken to celebrating his surgical acumen on social media;
Therefore, I, Gentner Drummond, Attorney General of the State of Oklahoma, do hereby recognize and commend Dr. Steven Shin,” Drummond summarized.

We’ll see if Oklahoma can keep the momentum building without Mateer under center. Their schedule ramps up in the weeks Mateer is expected out. Oklahoma is right to be drumming up as much hype as they can, as capturing a hot moment in September can create momentum in recruiting and on the field. But the key for Oklahoma to become what it had hoped when it joined the SEC, they must survive Mateer’s absence.
