The Oklahoma Sooners needed another quarterback to finish out their room. They lost almost every quarterback besides Michael Hawkins, who at one point was running practice with the ones, twos, and threes because he was the only one at practice. Of course, they have since added Jett Niu, John Mateer, and now their fourth QB.

With Mateer coming in as a transfer from Washington State, following his offensive coordinator from last season, he is the starter, and the Sooners have their backup in place with Hawkins. So, they really just needed depth.

On Christmas morning, they got exactly what they needed.

Sooners add QB through the transfer portal on Christmas

On Christmas morning, the Sooners were likely notified that they had landed Western Carolina University transfer quarterback Cole Gonzales.

Gonzales is from Ocala, Florida, where he attended Trinity Catholic High School. As a sophomore, he started all 11 games before an injury in the VMI game. He completed 204 out of 310 passes for 2,803 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

His performance earned him Southern Conference (SoCon) Offensive Player of the Week honors and the SoCon Player of the Year honors. He also set a school record with his 28 passing touchdowns. Over his time at Western Carolina, Gonzales amassed 6,682 passing yards and 51 touchdowns with 22 interceptions.

His completion percentage stands at 64%. He had a standout game against Furman in 2024, in which he passed for a Southern Conference record 620 yards and five touchdowns, setting a league benchmark for total offense with 801 yards in that game.

Gonzales was named to the Phil Steele FCS 2024 Preseason All-America team on the third-team offense, reflecting his significant impact on the field. He also received multiple preseason All-America honors before the 2024 season.

This is a great depth get for the Sooners.
