The Oklahoma Sooners fired their offensive coordinator Seth Littrell this week after a tough showing against the South Carolina Gamecocks. That wasn't the game that did it, though — the build-up to that game played a major part in the decision. Along with that, the Sooners decided to go back to Jackson Arnold as the starting quarterback.

I'm sure Michael Hawkins Jr.'s three straight turnovers leading to points played a big factor in that decision as well. Now, they will need to find an offensive coordinator who is good enough and has the reputation to keep the good offensive players they do have on the squad, from transferring, and keep their offensive recruits from decommitting.

The Sooners will start looking for who that will be almost immediately. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if head coach Brent Venables doesn't already have his eyes on a few guys. At A to Z Oklahoma, our very own AJ Schulte has put together a list of some candidates, but, there are some questions about how this process will go.

This is Venbales' first time as a head coach to have to fire or let someone go during the season instead of after. That never happens with him and honestly, it doesn't happen as often in college football as you would think.

So, how is he going to handle that? How is he going to handle that and remain focused on this season?

"You focus on getting better right now. You can always plan ahead without getting distracted. Yes, you multi-task, absolutely," Venables said on Tuesday during his press conference.

I'm not sure there should be any worrying about how Venables will handle this situation. Obviously, the circumstances are a bit different, but look how he's replaced his defensive coaching staff over the years, and now this is the best unit they have had on that side of the ball in a very long time.

The offense needs to get up to at least an average SEC offense. If they can find a coordinator who can do that, while keeping the defense great, this can be a great team. But, we likely won't see that happen until next season.

The Sooners play the Ole Miss Rebels next.
