The Oklahoma Sooners are gearing up to play a team that they have only ever played once in the Navy Midshipmen. Their 26th straight bowl game was good for the second-longest active streak behind the Georgia Bulldogs' 29 straight. And, they don't look like a program that will be losing less than six games anytime soon.
The Sooners are playing in Fort Worth, Texas, in the Armed Forces Bowl, where they will be without many of their players. The college football schedule is weird now—the transfer portal opens before the season is even officially over.
So, with that, and every other team is going through that as well, the Sooners will be without nearly half of their roster. They have lost players to the portal, graduation, and even the NFL draft coming up in some months or so.
On Thursday, the day before the game, head coach Brent Venables met with the media for the game, and he shed some light on exactly how their roster will look for the game. And, let's just say that the Sooners will have to play a lot of inexperienced players, and will have nearly half of their roster.
According to Venables, the Sooners will have 56 scholarship players available, and 24 of them are freshmen, with 12 being on each side of the ball. The Sooners will have to rely on some of their youth in this one against a very good Navy team.
Now, the good thing is that they will be able to kind of see what they have going into next year as far as their young guys go. And, while a win would be great, as they could then consider this a winning season sitting at 7-6, the Sooners really just need to see what they have and get some of the young guys the game reps they need.
This bowl game coming up is pretty important, to say the least.
