With the beginning of SEC play kicking off this week, the Oklahoma Sooners are back to posting mandatory injury reports. Naturally, this has caused fans to predictably freak out over any injury that occurs, fearing the same thing that occurred last season will begin again this season.

Most of the injuries on the report are largely overblown, as many of the players will play when the Sooners will square off against the Auburn Tigers on Saturday. However, the best news the Sooners could have gotten is what, or rather who, wasn’t on the injury report.

Cornerback Gentry Williams wasn’t featured on the initial injury report, likely clearing him to play against Auburn this weekend. This is a huge breakthrough for the Sooners, who will need Williams to help contain Auburn’s NFL wide receivers.

The Sooners Get Much-Needed Secondary Reinforcements

Gentry Williams missed Oklahoma’s dominant win over Temple and most of their victory over Michigan after leaving the game early. The Sooners, as it turned out, didn’t miss him too much as their secondary dominated both games, but Auburn is a much, much different opponent to handle than any of Oklahoma’s opponents so far.

The Tigers boast two NFL-caliber wide receivers in Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton, both of whom bring game-breaking ability if the Sooners aren’t careful. Fortunately, Auburn’s playbook is exactly suited for the kind of game Gentry Williams wants to play.

Auburn is a quick-game, underneath passing offense. They don’t want Jackson Arnold making reads or holding onto the ball for long, so the goal is to just get rid of it quickly and let his receivers do damage after the catch. Unfortunately for them, those are the kinds of plays Williams is excellent at shutting down. He’s quick to trigger downfield and frequently blows up underneath throws like that regularly.

Williams’ quick trigger has also made him a ballhawk with several notable interceptions of him running the route for the receiver and picking the pass off before it gets home. With Arnold’s frequent mental mistakes and Auburn’s style of offense, these skills could be a boon for the Sooners’ defense, who are still looking for their first turnover.

In such a critical matchup that almost feels like a must-win for the Sooners, they will need all hands on deck to beat a talented Auburn team and head into their bye week undefeated. With Williams returning, they might have gained a key playmaker that could tip the scales for Oklahoma in this one.
