Ever since general manager Jim Nagy joined the Oklahoma Sooners football program early this offseason, he has completely remade the recruiting strategy for the team. It isn’t all about the raw star rating system, something that Nagy has continued to push back on, and says that they don’t care about. The Sooner staff is, more than ever, trusting their own evaluation process for how they stack their target board.

Only time will tell if this new process is revolutionary, or

On Thursday, Oklahoma gained a commitment from 2027 Southlake (Texas) Carroll offensive tackle Luke Wilson. The Sooners won out over other offers that include Florida State, Arizona State, Wake Forest, TCU, UTSA, UTEP, and James Madison. Obviously, that is not the most exciting offer list of all time, and there is going to be a large portion of the Sooners fan base that isn’t going to be overly excited about this recruiting news.

If that offer list doesn’t impress you, unfortunately, the star rankings won’t either. The 6-7, 285-pound offensive lineman is not currently ranked highly by any of the major recruiting platforms. In fact, none of them have ranked him yet. Since Wilson plays at a football powerhouse like Southlake Carroll, it is troubling that he isn’t that highly ranked or heavily pursued on the recruiting side. Wilson has certainly had a lot of exposure, but the interest still hasn’t picked up much.

Wilson was a player who chose to camp with the Oklahoma Sooners this offseason, and managed to earn his scholarship offer. He held that offer for two months, but has opted to take advantage of the opportunity now.

With that new process, fans are going to have to be somewhat patient to see if this strategy pays off. They brought in Nagy for a reason, and he is going to have a longer leash to see if he can build a championship program under head coach Brent Venables. Will that strategy of finding underrated talent pay off in the long run? Only time will tell.

Over his long career with the Sooners, offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh has earned a resume as one of the best developers of talent in all of college football. While he is a tremendous coach, the recruiting resume has been a bit troubling recently. They were able to close out on a couple of really talented offensive linemen in Michael Fasusi and Ryan Fodje in the 2025 recruiting class, but the consistency has been extremely troubling over the last several years.

The offensive line needs to play a lot better in 2025, and into the foreseeable future for the Venables Era to turn around. Adding talent will be essential. It will be interesting to see if Wilson can be a part of that solution.
