The Oklahoma Sooners have been super hot when it comes to recruiting. They have nabbed a handful of commitments the last month, with some of them being very good, but also some of them addressing some of their future needs.

But, they finally took a loss.

Sooners lose out on Mason James

Mason James, a four-star wide receiver from Norman North High School in Oklahoma, is a top prospect in the 2026 class. And, he should be a Sooners right now, considering he is in town, and from the area. I mean, what kid growing up down the street from the university doesn't want to go to OU?

In his 2024 junior season, he caught 56 passes for over 1,200 yards and 17 touchdowns, leading Norman North to a strong year. Ranked as Oklahoma’s No. 1 player by On3 and a top-50 national wide receiver, he’s a dynamic playmaker who can stretch defenses and gain yards after the catch.

And, he plays the way the Sooners would love to have on their offense. But, he won't be doing it in their offense. Instead, he will be doing it across the country, in Seattle, Washington.

James had nearly 30 D1 offers and recently narrowed his choices to five schools, with Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas, Kansas State, and Washington as the schools he wanted to go to most. Out of them all, he chose Washington, a school without any real recent success, and no recent success at the QB position, either.

So, he chose to go to a school that was much inferior. So, to me, that tells me that they just fumbled the recruiting site of it all. They maybe just not have just left a big enough impression, and they didn't do enough to convince a kid already in town that he should stay home.

That, or what Washington just did too much. Or, maybe the Sooners weren't as high on him as other teams. Either way, it feels like a loss for the Sooners.
