The Oklahoma Sooners need to continue to recruit well and keep the heat on the teams they are competing with. They aren't blowing the doors off by any means, but they are recruiting well for a team that just won six total games, losing the bowl game.

Two of the last three seasons the Sooners have had a losing record, which wasn't done once before that since the 1990s. That cannot happen, especially two seasons under the same coach. If Venables wants to continue to keep his job, he has to nail it in recruiting, which he seems to be doing.

He's doing it so well that players are leaving campus and immediately locking in official visits because they enjoyed the first one so much. Another one has done just that.

Jamarion Phillips locks in visit with Oklahoma

Jamarion Phillips is a three-star linebacker from South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, Texas, and a top player in the Class of 2026. He’s 6-foot-1, 220 pounds, and known for his speed and tackling ability.

Recruiting sites like 247Sports rank him as the No. 79 linebacker in the country and No. 95 overall in Texas. He had nearly 30 college offers from big schools like Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Texas A&M before committing to Baylor. But that doesn't mean the Sooners can't flip him.

At South Oak Cliff, Phillips has been a star on a strong team that’s made the Texas 5A Division II state title game four years in a row, winning in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, as a sophomore, he had 95 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, and a forced fumble.

His junior year in 2024 was just as good, with 90 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, an interception, two pass breakups, and a forced fumble. He was named District 5-5A Division II Defensive MVP and made the first-team all-area list by The Dallas Morning News.

Phillips picked Baylor after visiting schools like Oklahoma and Texas A&M. He’s the sixth commit in Baylor’s 2026 class and the first linebacker, joining other Dallas-area players.

However, after the initial visit with Oklahoma, he had big words, which could indicate that he would be able to be flipped by Oklahoma.

“That’s a defense I’d want to be a part of… They’re very, very high on my board," Phillips told Rivals.

There is always a chance.
