General manager Jim Nagy has wasted no time in his first full transfer portal cycle with the Oklahoma Sooners, as he has raked in over half a dozen transfers in just a few days of the portal officially being open. The Sooners have added talented playmakers on both sides of the ball, but they might have just made their most impactful addition yet.

Former Michigan Wolverines linebacker Cole Sullivan joined the Oklahoma Sooners out of the transfer portal, reinforcing arguably the weakest position on Oklahoma’s defense. Sullivan, arguably the most impactful player on the Wolverines’ defense this season, will bolster a unit losing two of its top players in the offseason.

Cole Sullivan is a perfect fit for Brent Venables

Having covered Michigan weekly in addition to the Sooners, I can attest to Cole Sullivan’s ability as an impact playmaker. Despite not being a “starter” until the end of the season, Sullivan led the Wolverines in interceptions, finished tied for third in sacks, and was sixth in defensive stops while only appearing in 11 games and didn’t become a regular contributor until Week 3.

Sullivan single-handedly delivered Michigan their win over the Washington Huskies in Week 8, and he was everywhere for the Wolverines in their losing effort against the Ohio State Buckeyes to close the season.

He is a high-motor, high-energy player who fits exactly what the Sooners want and need at linebacker under Brent Venables, boasting strong instincts in coverage and good pursuit range from sideline-to-sideline. It’s no surprise that Nagy immediately identified him as a priority addition out of the transfer portal and fought hard to lure him to Norman.

Kip Lewis is still deciding on his future with the Sooners, so we shall see what the room looks like in 2026 once he makes that decision, but regardless of if Lewis returns or not, Sullivan will be a key contributor for Oklahoma’s defense and could be one of the best players on the entire unit next season. This could be the biggest win of the Sooners’ entire transfer portal class.
