The Oklahoma Sooners could potentially lose former five-star defensive tackle David Stone, who head coach Brent Venables has said made a big leap from last year to this summer. And, while he hasn't lived up to expectations, he will be missed.

So, the Sooners have to prepare for the reality of that happening. Just because Stone has entered the portal doesn't necessarily mean he is gone. However, it is likely that he will leave. But we have seen crazier things.

The Sooners already have a visit coming up with a defensive tackle that could replace Stone. And, it just so happens that his name is also Stone.

Sooners to visit with Jaylon Stone

Jaylon Stone, a 6-foot-3, 295-pound redshirt freshman defensive lineman from Southeast Missouri State, entered the NCAA transfer portal recently after a strong 2024 season. He recorded 35 tackles, six tackles for loss, and two sacks in 2024. As a true freshman in 2023, he played four games, redshirted, and had eight tackles, one tackle for loss, one pass breakup, and two quarterback hurries.

Stone’s size, versatility, and three years of eligibility have drawn interest from Power 5 schools like Kentucky, Illinois, and Oklahoma, with official visits scheduled, including Kentucky on April 25-27, 2025. Southeast Missouri’s defensive line struggled in 2024, with only two sacks, prompting Stone to seek a better fit, and showing that with better players around him, he could only put up better numbers as well.

When the players around you don't do their job, it's hard for you to do yours at a high level. He’s drawn to Kentucky’s defensive scheme and early playing time potential. Programs like Alabama are also rumored to be interested. His transfer decision hinges on upcoming visits, as he looks to join a program where he can maximize his impact.

With Oklahoma, he could do that. The Sooners love to rotate guys in and out, and Brent Venables loves to use his depth on the defensive line. And, Stone is an amazing run defender.

With Davis Stone possibly gone, the Sooners will be looking for a replacement or two. If they land Jaylon Stone, they could be set.
