The Oklahoma Sooners made ripples throughout the college football landscape on Thursday when they hired former Dallas Cowboys legend Jason Witten to serve as their tight ends coach. The Sooners have completely overhauled that room, and Witten will be asked to spearhead what was the worst unit on the team last season.

However, upgrading the tight end room might not be the only thing Witten will be bringing to Norman. He could be bringing a big-time recruit with him who would be one of the best players Brent Venables has ever coached.

Could Cooper Witten follow his dad to the Sooners?

Don’t look now, but the Sooners and Venables have built the number-one recruiting class in 2027, securing several high-powered commitments on the offensive side of the ball. However, the Sooners have yet to bring in an five-star defensive recruit into the fray of that class, something that Witten could change.

In fact, Witten could snap somewhat of a cold streak for the Sooners. After bringing in five stars like PJ Adebawore and David Stone in Venables’ first few recruiting classes, Oklahoma hasn’t had a single five-star recruit defensively since. Witten, the #1 linebacker and top-20 player in the 2027 class, is a consensus five-star recruit and the fourth-overall recruit from Texas in the 2027 class.

If he were to follow his dad to the Sooners, he would be Oklahoma’s first five-star linebacker recruit since Caleb Kelly to come to Oklahoma.

Sooners 2027 recruiting class could be an all-timer

As it stands right now, Oklahoma boasts the top-ranked class in 2027 with 11 commits so far, and a few more recruits not named Witten set to be added here shortly.

Using 247Sports Team Calculator, adding Witten alongside a pair of recruits the Sooners are poised to add, Oklahoma’s class would sit with a 243.93 rating from 247. That puts them a full 42 points over the second-place Texas A&M Aggies. And 42 points was the same difference from USC’s #1 class and Washington’s at 12th in 2026.

The Sooners have all the momentum in the world right now from what is shaping up to be their strongest offseason in years. If they can back that up with another strong year of play in 2026, the sky is the limit for what this 2027 class could end up as.
