EA Sports is ramping up their promotion for their newest college football video game, and plenty of folks are excited. For the Oklahoma Sooners, their biggest transfer portal success story is garnering plenty of respect in this year's game.
Mateer ranked as one of the top QBs in CFB 26
The Sooners new starter is ranked as the sixth-best QB in the latest rendition of the video game. He's rated as a 91 overall. Only three QBs in colleges football are rated as a 92 overall – the highest rating as of now for the position.
With the latest iteration of EA Sports College Football 26 set to be released on July 10, the ratings for individual players have begun leaking. Oklahoma is well represented with nine players rated 87 or higher, including two at 90 or above. — Yahoo! Sports
Mateer's ranking amongst his peers by EA Sports actually exactly matches his spot in A to Z Sports' recent college quarterback rankings. He was ranked sixth in the P4 (and Notre Dame) for us as well.
His running ability, diversified by an above average arm, makes for a QB profile hat could be a Heisman candidate in 2025 in Norman.
One of the elements that makes this list different from others out there is that it's based upon how good you are solely as a college quarterback, which means I'm not including pro potential.
Mateer offers some intrigue at the next level due to his mobility and playmaking ability, but the reason why he lands so high on this list is the knack to simply make a play. In Ben Arbuckle's offense last year, Mateer thrived as a first-year starter both through the air and on the ground, with a certain element of pizzazz in his game. He goes to Oklahoma playing in the same offense, but with better surroundings. The two biggest issues for the Sooners last year were at quarterback and injuries to the wide receivers. They fixed the first issue, and Mateer's likely ascension could prove to be huge in keeping Brent Venables' job. — Tyler Forness
Sooners QB must take advantage of opportunity
I discussed Mateer's opportunity with A to Z's own Justin Churchill this week. He covers plenty of Sooners news and updates.
John Mateer has a lot to prove in 2025 when it comes to his game. In 2024 you could look at his stats and see that he was one of the best players in all of college football, and got the job done both through the air and on the ground. But, that was in the PAC-2. The stipulation is that now he has to do it against the best competition in college football, playing the hardest schedule in college football. But, you could also rebuttal that with the fact that now he will be playing with better players, coaches, and have better facilities to prepare him week to week.
I think it’s very possible we are talking about Mateer as the best QB in the country by the years end, and if not the best, a top three quarterback at worst. But, it’s all on him to prove that, and hope that the offense is fixed under Ben Arbuckle with the improved weapons they now have. — Justin Churchill
As Churchill notes, the most intriguing aspect of Mateer's upcoming season is the change in competition. He will face SEC defenses regularly, which will certainly give him a different look and greater challenge when it comes to reads and throwing windows.
