Late on Monday night, an issue arose regarding one of the Oklahoma Sooners‘ players, quarterback John Mateer, and it didn’t look good at first. Really, it still doesn’t look good.

The Sooners needed a quarterback coming into this season because Jackson Arnold and Michael Hawkins showed they just weren’t ready last season. Well, that, and the bad offensive scheme paired with poor play calling and injuries, surely didn’t help them.

Hawkins, who was a true freshman five-star quarterback last year, opted to stay at Oklahoma, while Arnold transferred to Auburn. The door was open for the Sooners to get former Washington State quarterback John Mateer, and it made perfect sense considering his former offensive coordinator was now the Sooners’ OC in Ben Arbuckle.

Things are looking good for the Sooners, as the offense is much improved, and they are garnering everyone’s attention. On Monday night, John Mateer garnered everyone’s attention, but not for good reasons.

John Mateer is on alert for a potential gambling scandal

On Monday night, someone discovered Mateer’s old Venmo account, and apparently, his transactions are not private. This means that anything he entered in the “What For” bar when sending money to someone is visible to all of us. And, we can see who it is, too.

On his profile, before he wiped it clean and deleted everything, were a few transactions made to former Washington State teammates for gambling, specifically on a UCLA game. This was in 2022, when he was a freshman at Washington State and hadn’t played yet. That is very important for all the information we are receiving.

The Oklahoma Sooners started looking into it on Tuesday morning. They will exhaust every avenue to find out and ensure that Mateer doesn’t get suspended by the NCAA. Pete Nakos and George Stoia of On3 have both reported that Mateer is denying any sports gambling.

And we have to remember that, at the time, in 2022, he was 18 years old. Who’s to say that he and his friends weren’t joking around and just putting random things in the caption?

So, the Sooners, at this moment, are doing whatever they can to make sure their worst nightmare doesn’t come true.
