Oklahoma Sooners star Michael Fasusi shaping up to continue elite NFL pipeline up front
The Oklahoma Sooners struck gold with five-star true freshman offensive tackle Michael Fasusi.
The Oklahoma Sooners scored one of their biggest recruiting wins of the Brent Venables tenure last season when they beat out the Texas Longhorns for five-star offensive tackle Michael Fasusi. Fasusi started right away for the Sooners, and was a standout performer from the get-go. So much so, that he already has the attention of scouts after his true freshman season.
At the Shrine Bowl, I caught up with NFL draft analyst Cory Kinnan, who runs the Daft on Draft Substack, about Fasusi and why he felt so confident in Fasusi being such a coveted prospect.
“Not only does he have the prototypical size and body type of an offensive tackle in a league starved for of offensive tackles, but the physical tools are off the charts. His foot speed is exceptional, his punch is strong, and the grip strength is devastatingly rep-ending. In a down tackle class, there is no doubt that Fasusi would be the first offensive tackle off the board if he were draft eligible this year.”
This season, Fasusi started 10 games at left tackle and played in 11, allowing four sacks and 19 pressures. However, his traits already pop off the film, and he’s being coached by one of the best offensive line coaches in college football. Bill Bedenbaugh set records for back-to-back first-round tackles with Anton Harrison Jr and Tyler Guyton, and has produced well over a dozen NFL offensive linemen since bein hired in 2013.
Next year, the Sooners return all five starters on the offensive line with Fasusi, left guard Eddy Pierre-Louis, center Jake Maikkula, right guard Heath Ozaeta, and right tackle Ryan Fodje, returning the most production they’ve had since 2016-17. With all of this returning production, the Sooners are primed for a significant step up on offense next season. It will all hinge on the health and play of quarterback John Mateer.
