Oklahoma Sooners on verge of dunking on the rest of the SEC with something they haven’t accomplished in years
The Sooners could achieve something they haven’t accomplished in years if recruiting predictions hold true.
The Oklahoma Sooners have been on a heater in their recruiting under new general manager Jim Nagy, who rebuilt the Sooners’ 2026 class and currently has the Sooners with the No.1 recruiting class in 2027.
They are getting closer and closer to add a player that would undoubtedly widen that margin to an almost eye-popping degree. Five-star LB Cooper Witten, the son of future Pro Football Hall of Famer and current Sooners’ tight ends coach Jason Witten, has now had multiple predictions for him to join Oklahoma’s elite 2027 class, and they aren’t slowing down anytime soon.
Oklahoma Sooners could earn huge win over SEC rivals
The Sooners went 10-2 in the regular season in 2025, but the winning hasn’t stopped, and Oklahoma has plenty of momentum behind them on and off the field. Adding Witten would give the Sooners another win over the SEC competition. Every SEC school and major national powerhouse has offered Witten.
The No. 1 linebacker and five-star is obviously drawing attention from across the country, but the main competitors with the Sooners seem to be the Texas A&M Aggies and Tennessee Volunteers. Beating out those two schools for Witten would make securing his commitment just that much sweeter, given the history between those schools and Oklahoma.
Cooper Witten would be a significant win in many ways
Obviously, the main draw of Cooper Witten is that he’s a dang good football player who would undoubtedly help the Sooners continue their winning ways. He would be Oklahoma’s third five-star commit of the 2027 class as an elite, blue-chip caliber prospect.
The significance of his commitment, in my opinion, would be its reflection of Oklahoma’s regained status as a defensive powerhouse. The Sooners haven’t landed a linebacker of Witten’s caliber in years. Their previous highest-ranked LB recruit ever was Caleb Kelly, back in 2016. As much as I love Kelly for his work on and off the field at Oklahoma, we’re talking a different caliber of player here.
Imagine telling someone during the Lincoln Riley era that Oklahoma would be beating out SEC powerhouses for the top linebacker recruit. Nobody would believe it. That, right there, is the proof in the pudding that the Sooners are regaining their status as a blue-blood among the college football world, and Brent Venables is the man behind it all.
Oklahoma’s 2027 recruiting class strategy
The Sooners are clearly gearing up for the 2027 class to be their building block of the future. Cooper Hackett and Kaeden Penny will take over for Michael Fasusi and Ryan Fodje as the bookend tackles, as both of those guys seem like easy NFL early declarations. Taven Epps and Cooper Witten roam the middle of the defense, while Krew Jones and Elija Harmon collapse the pocket to force errant throws to Mikhail McCreary and Mikyal Davis.
Oklahoma added elite quarterback Bowe Bentley in their 2026 recruiting class, and they view him as the key centerpiece of their next chapter as a program. The way they are building out the 2027 class is a reflection of their vision to add blue-chip talent around Bentley to build up the rest of roster around him. Much like we see in the NFL when a team pushes the chips in with a rookie quarterback in his second or third season, the Sooners are clearly raising the margins across the roster around Bentley.
