Oklahoma Sooners make another surprising move to their coaching staff that every blue-blood program should want to make
The Sooners are on the rise.
The Oklahoma Sooners have made significant moves both on and off the field since their season ended, including changes to the coaching staff.
In college football, it’s not just about the players you can get in high school recruiting or the transfer portal. Sure, that’s a big part of it, maybe the biggest. However, another decent chunk of the pie in the equation that equals winning is the coaching staff. Oklahoma went and got former Dallas Cowboys legend Jason Witten. Hopefully, he can help turn the TE room around. And now, they’ve hired another former NFL player.
According to George Stoia of Sooner Scoop, OU is expected to hire former Clemson and Denver Broncos starting defensive tackle DeShawn Williams in an analyst role. That may seem like it’s not that big of a deal, but it’s huge, and here’s why.
Why the Sooners getting DeShawn Williams on staff is huge
Another former NFL starter on staff helps with coaching and recruiting. Recruits want to reach the NFL, so they choose programs with coaches who’ve been there, proving they know what it takes.
Players will come play for a guy they think can get them to the league, who is willing to share everything he did right and wrong that got that coach there. Williams knows about the current state of the league, too, as he played as recently as 2024.
Williams will also bring a strong work ethic to the Sooners. As Stoia reported, Williams was once an Amazon worker who kept working and working until he became an NFL starter. He has a great story of demonstrating a strong work ethic, which should translate nicely. He’s going to be a good coach, and he knows the ball as he started 45 games over his career.
The move ultimately shows that head coach Brent Venables is willing to do whatever it takes to make his team better, even if it has nothing to do with the players, demonstrating his commitment to strengthening every aspect of the program.
