Oklahoma Sooners continue to push closer toward what everyone knows is coming regarding one elite recruit
The Sooners are the favorite to land Jameson Roberts.
The Oklahoma Sooners have secured their starting quarterback for the upcoming season: John Mateer is set for a comeback in 2026. Bowe Bentley is expected to take over in 2027, possibly the year after. So for now, that position is covered.
However, what will the Sooners be doing after Bentley? Well, there is reason to believe that QB could be Jameson Roberts, the Mobile, Alabama quarterback in the 2027 class. He just recently met with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle on a visit in Mobile, and now he’s knocked his potential teams down to his top eight, with Oklahoma still seemingly being in the lead to land the quarterback.
Sooners could get their next elite quarterback
Roberts, a three-star quarterback in the 2027 recruiting class, has not yet committed to Oklahoma, but the staff feels confident they will land him. Reflecting this confidence, OU is not actively seeking other quarterbacks for 2027, expecting Bentley to lead the team in both 2027 and 2028. They also believe Roberts is underrated and see him as a possible starter in 2029. The only other QBs they have offered in the 2027 class are Peyton Houston, who’s committed to the LSU Tigers, and Trae Taylor, who’s committed to Nebraska.
When considering NFL talent, Oklahoma’s legacy is strong. Several former OU quarterbacks lead the way: Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield, Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray, and Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts.
Adding to this impressive NFL pipeline, you can also include Cleveland Browns starter Dillon Gabriel and New Orleans Saints QB Spencer Rattler. Soon, Mateer could join their ranks if he gets drafted, as many think he will. From early indications, Bentley might have the talent to reach the NFL, as OU projects him as their “franchise guy,” while Mateer is labeled the potential “bridge” quarterback.
Roberts possesses attributes that could elevate him to an elite level, where many think he will be a four-star by the time he gets on campus. As a dynamic dual-threat, he’s unafraid to absorb contact. His deep ball accuracy, especially on over-the-shoulder passes, stands out. OU is leading the race, but they do have some other teams to worry about.
The Arkansas Razorbacks, Ole Miss Rebels, Auburn Tigers, Kentucky Wildcats, Iowa Hawkeyes, Duke Blue Devils, and Northwestern are all in the top eight as well. On3 currently has Auburn as the second team to watch.
