Oklahoma Sooners lose the battle for a four-star playmaker who would have only made OU’s 2027 class even better
The Sooners still have one of the best 2027 classes in the country.
The Arizona State Sun Devils, Washington Huskies, and the Oklahoma Sooners were all in the running for elite four-star wide receiver Zerek Sidney, a 2027 playmaker from Arizona. The Sooners ended up losing out on Sidney, as he chose the Huskies.
Sidney is currently ranked as the No. 363 overall prospect and the No. 53 wide receiver nationally in the 2027 recruiting class, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking. Additionally, Sidney is regarded as the No. 5 overall player in Arizona, making him one of the most sought-after talents in his class. Oklahoma already has the No. 3 class in the country, and adding Sidney would have given OU a chance to rank even higher.
Sidney’s decision was based on more than just football
“There are a lot of deciding factors, but I’d say my top ones are relationship with the staff, academics, coaching stability, how I fit into the playbook, and how they view playing freshman,” Sidney previously told Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett.
The Sooners also have a key commit from one of Sidney’s high school teammates in three-star cornerback Mikyal Davis, who’s viewed as a player OU really likes, and could improve his rating by the time he’s signed by OU. This is another reason many thought the Sooners had a legit chance in getting Sidney.
“Oklahoma’s goal for me to play inside and out and early is exciting, not to mention it’s in the SEC,” Sidney said before committing to Washington.
Now, he will join Jedd Fisch and Washington, who have aspirations of fighting for a Big 10 title. This loss doesn’t really hurt the Sooners, though. When you look at the wide receiver class they’re bringing in for 2026, it’s amazing. Guys like Jayden Petit have the potential to be superstars in this league. OU also has Demare Dezeurn in the 2027 class, and like a handful of elite players, like Tre Moore and Briceson Thrower, who are both elite wide receivers.
