The Oklahoma Sooners knew they would have to replace former athletic director Joe Castiglione after the football season ended. So, they went out and got Roger Denny, a former lawyer and deputy athletic director for Illinois.

Some fans are worried that a former lawyer wouldn’t know how to operate as the AD at one of the most prestigious sports programs in the country. But Denny already has the right mindset for his new job.

New Sooners athletic director Roger Denny has the perfect mindset

“(I’m) not willing to accept anything but going out and winning,” Denny told the media and reporters during his introductory press conference. “The unwillingness to accept anything but the absolute best. I haven’t shied away at all from conversations about dynasties. I think that’s what Oklahoma deserves. I think that’s what we’re going to go get.”

It seems like the Sooners have picked the right guy, and that’s what’s most important. They assembled an entire staff to search for the new AD, including several people who embody what it means to be a Sooner. Former head coach Bob Stoops, former quarterback Sam Bradford, and a handful of others thought Denny was the right guy.

We’ve already seen him show his mindset to the fans, too.

“Coach Baranczyk has started a fire in this building…we need to pour gas on it. Keep showing up. Tell everyone you know. Get them here. Be loud. Be proud. And let’s see how far we can push this. Boomer Sooner,” Denny said at Thursday night’s women’s basketball game that saw OU beat the Texas A&M Fighting Aggies.

Replacing Castiglione won’t be easy at all. However, the Sooners seem to have found the right guy for the job. Now, as Denny stated, it’s about getting the men’s basketball program where it needs to be.
