The Oklahoma Sooners have secured their starting quarterback lineup for the upcoming seasons: John Mateer is set for 2026, Bowe Bentley is expected to take over in 2027, and Jameson Roberts is a potential candidate for the years following Bentley’s tenure.

Roberts, a three-star quarterback in the 2027 recruiting class, has not yet committed to Oklahoma, but they feel confident they will land him. OU is not actively seeking other quarterbacks for 2027, reflecting confidence that Bentley will be the starting quarterback for both the 2027 and 2028 seasons. They also believe Roberts is underrated as a three-star prospect and could be their quarterback starting in 2029.

The 6’3, 200-pound quarterback from Mobile, Alabama, recently received a visit from OU offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle. Roberts posted a photo on Twitter with Arbuckle in front of what looks like an oyster house in Mobile. For Arbuckle, the timing was ideal, as he avoided the frigid, snowy conditions in Oklahoma.

Sooners historically know how to spot good QBs

When considering NFL talent, several former OU quarterbacks lead the way: Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield, Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray, and Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts.

You can also include Cleveland Browns starter Dillon Gabriel and New Orleans Saints QB Spencer Rattler. Soon, Mateer could join their ranks. From early indications, Bentley might possess the talent to reach the NFL, as OU projects him as their “franchise guy.”

Roberts has all the attributes of an elite quarterback. He’s a dynamic dual-threat quarterback unafraid to take hits if it means making a game-winning play, as he showed against the Blount Leopards. His deep ball accuracy, especially on over-the-shoulder throws, is outstanding. Roberts is one of the top three-star quarterbacks you’ll find, and he could easily rise in the rankings next season.

OU clearly likes him, and they’re making it known.
