Sooners head coach Brent Venables gives an early injury update for spring football that no coach wants to give
The Sooners will need those guys healthy when the season comes.
The Oklahoma Sooners kicked off spring football practice on Wednesday. We’ve already been given a glimpse of what this team could look like via media on-site. We’ve also been given an update that no coach wants to give this early. Almost every coach does have to give it, though.
Sooners HC Brent Venables gives first injury update for spring football
According to head coach Brent Venables, the Sooners will be without running back Tory Blaylock for the entire spring. However, he could return in the summer, just in time to get ready for fall football. Blaylock appears to be a big part of the running back rotation in 2026. He started in 2025 as a true freshman because Jaydn Ott and Xavier Robinson were not yet healthy.
He carried the load until Robinson returned. Blaylock even contributed a lot after Robinson became the starter. He was set to likely be the RB2 in this offense. That now opens a lane for freshman RBs DeZephen Walker and Johnathon Hatton to fight for that spot. Transfer portal RB Lloyd Avant is also in the mix.
Venables also mentioned that defensive tackle David Stone will not play much this spring. They want to ensure he is healthy for the summer, as he dealt with issues late last season. His DT running mate, Jayden Jackson, is still recovering from shoulder surgery. This will give more reps to freshman James Carrington and Brian Harris, along with transfer portal DT Kenny Ozowalu and Bishop Thomas.
The last name Venables mentioned was transfer portal receiver Trell Harris from Virginia. He had a “cleanup” procedure and will be out for a couple of weeks. This is important for the four freshman wide receivers and the transfer portal receivers as well. However, Harris seems likely to be a WR2 or WR3, so the team needs him back soon.
