Oklahoma Sooners have already found all of their answers to a huge question regarding the 2026 and 2027 seasons
The Sooners have their quarterback for 2027 already.
The Oklahoma Sooners started spring football on Wednesday, and it was an eventful first day. According to several reports, the media were allowed to watch up to an hour of practice, and it feels like one huge question has already been answered. That question pertains to 2026 and 2027.
Sooners already know who QB Bowe Bentley will be for them
Coming into the season, there was a question about who would be the backup quarterback behind John Mateer, the starting QB. Would it be true, freshman Bowe Bentley? Would it be redshirt freshman Jett Niu, or would it be redshirt sophomore Whitt Newbauer? Maybe, just maybe, the true freshman Bentley could crack the spot. That’s been the biggest question, and most of the answers we all have are the same—it’s Bentley.
On Wednesday, reporters and people on the beat confirmed that it’s pretty obvious Bentley is the backup. He has the best release, the best mechanics, and the quickest release. Bentley was a four-star quarterback in the Sooners’ 2026 class and was really their prized possession in the class. Some of the videos we got, courtesy of guys like Josh Callaway at 247 Sports, show that Bentley can already make very impressive throws. But, it’s early—there’s no live defense coming at him yet.
However, all of these things we already saw, along with everything we are hearing from the media at practice, suggest that Bentley is, without a doubt, the guy to take over for Mateer in 2027. After this season, Mateer will head to the NFL Draft. OU will need a quarterback to take over for Mateer. The sophomore or redshirt freshman, depending on how much he plays in 2026, will be the guy.
Oklahoma has a reputation for landing some pretty elite quarterbacks. The next one could be Bentley. However, as we have already said, it’s early.
